Sticky Tape Cat Training
One of the biggest challenges cat owners face is training their cats from doing things that they shouldnt. Dogs pick right up on animal training, but cats are much more independant and will not always listen to you. Do not despair! There are ways to train cats to behave properly, you just need to know some of the techniques. The sticky tape training method is one of the best ways to train cats to keep away from certain areas, and if you give it a try, im sure your cat will respond.
What Is The Sticky Tape Method?
The idea behind this method is that cats do not like stepping on sticky stuff in the least! Sticky stuff does not hurt them at all, but they can’t stand the feeling of it on their paws, so they keep away from it whenever they feel it on them. So if you want to keep your kitty away from a certain place, like the top of your hamster cage, get the sticky tape out!
How To Do It
First grab a piece of cardboard that is roughly the size of the area that you want to keep the cat away from. This works great for the tops of cages, refrigerators, cabinets, in front of doors etc.. although it does not really work for covering an entire countertop. Go ahead and cover one entire side with either double sided tape, or take normal tape and curve it in on itself so that the sticky side is facing up. You should now have a piece of cardboard that is covered on one side completely with sticky tape.
What Happens Next
So now lay that cardboard, sticky side facing up, on the top of your hamster cage, cabinet, refrigerator, or wherever it is you want to keep your kitty from going. I often throw a couple of pieces of tape on the bottom as well to keep the cardboard securely in place. When your cat goes and walks on the cardboard, they will feel the stickyness and keep away from it! It will not take them very long to start avoiding that area completely. If the tape starts to lose its stickyness or gets dirty you may have to reapply some fresh tape.
Where To Use?
Not only can you use it on chairs, tables, appliances, cages, etc.. but you can use the sticky board wherever it is that you don’t want your kitty to go. One of my favorite uses is for when a kitty scratches and rubs on a door constantly. Just lay the sticky board down in front of the door like it was a big doormat. Now your cat will not want to step on the board and therefore will not be able to get to the door to scratch and meow at it.
There are many creative ways i’m sure you can find for this excellent cat training method. Give it a try and you just might start having some luck with your stubborn cat. Good luck!
